NEWS FLASH! We've recently learned from the historian Alex Schust, author of "Coalwood" and "Gary Hollow", that the Elkhorn Inn Was built in 1922 after a fire destroyed the previous wooden building! The historic "Coal Heritage Trail" building that is now the Elkhorn Inn was built by Empire Coal & Coke Co., as their "Miner's Clubhouse", as the 1929 and 1930s photos below show. Click here to join our "Coal Heritage Trail Weekends" in 2009, with Alex Schust. From our many guests who lived or worked in this building, we have learned that in the 1940s it was a rooming house for coal mining families, & was privately owned in the 1950s. Later a State Police barracks, in the 1970s it was the offices of Hawley Coal, & in 1988 it was Data Services, Inc. (see History Page 3, & our Railfan Page for a photo). Restoring & living in this "Coal Heritage Trail" building is a wonderful, continuing adventure; our recent programs on HGTV's "Building Character" & "ReZONED" highlighted some of the great architectural details we "uncovered" in the process of restoring this building: the turn-of-the-century tile floor in the original two-tub bathroom, transom windows, the original hemlock banister, & pay-window... The Inn's "Museum Room" has coal samples, mine maps, scrip, photos, books, and other items, & we continue to collect Empire & Hawley Coal, Pocahontas RR, Landgraff, & McDowell Co. memorabilia. West Virginia authors NIck Christodoulou & Raymond Daugherty, have sent us their books & memoirs on growing up in this area, which we have for our guests to read. Click here to read more about Raymond Daugherty. If you have items for the "Museum Room", or info or photos to share, please click here to email or call us at 1-800-708-2040. Click to see our restoration of the Elkhorn Inn & Theatre!
