(Well, Dan did it- with some amazing help from Mike & Mark!) When we decided to buy the property that held the flood-damaged historic "Coal Heritage Trail" building we restored and opened as the Elkhorn Inn, it was because we first fell in love with the Theatre. A copy of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the little Theatre was waterlogged and a bit sad, and in need of finishing up with a stain and trim, but it had a solid foundation and was in good repair. We saw it as the perfect place for local bands to play, and for weddings, receptions, reunions, and ATV "poker runs" in McDowell County, and in the fall of 2002 we decided to buy the property. In October, 2002, immediately after we bought the property, West Virginia DoT/DoH damaged the Theatre by dropping several tons of boulders next to and onto it. These rocks pushed the stage away from the foundation posts, damaging the foundation of the Theatre and the stairs. In destroying the Theatre, they destroyed our business plan and ability to get financing. After agreeing repeatedly to repair their damages and then delaying the process endlessly, they did nothing. Their damages and delays have now cost us over five years of economic damage, and they have tied us up in a seemingly endless lawsuit. Dan and our family and friends repaired the Theatre- with "sweat equity"- to the point where it could be used again, and the first wedding and reception, with a concert by the McDowell County bluegrass band "Alan Johnston & South 52", was held at the Elkhorn Theatre on July 3, 2005!
